Kicking the Snot out of SNUC

About

Kathleen, Greg, Michael and Stephen

Kathleen, Greg, Michael and Stephen

Kathleen is a 38-year-old mother of two amazing boys Stephen (6) and Michael (2) and has been married to her husband Greg for 7 years. A few weeks ago she was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer called Sinonasal Undifferentiated Carcinoma (SNUC). This cancer has affected less than 100 people across the US.

This web site was setup in part to help promote the “Kicking the Snot out of SNUC” fundraising event outside of Facebook but also to try to help raise funds for Kathleen from people who cannot participate in the event but would still like to give something to help. The blog will also be kept up-to-date with any upcoming events and news regarding Kathleen’s battle with cancer.

Please join us in helping Kathleen.

UPDATE 2011/12/20: The above was originally posted on September 22, 2009. A lot has happened since that time… Kathleen has won her battle against SNUC. Unfortunately, others like Saskia and Ashley were less fortunate. Kathleen’s husband Greg died of complications following (non-SNUC) cancer treatment. I decided to leave this page as the main website page because it contains so many comments and so that people know the history of this website/blog. I invite you however to check the Events and News page as anything new will be posted there.

IMPORTANT: If you found this page because you or someone you know is suffering from SNUC, please read this post.

Hi Kathleen, we think of you and your little family. We send you much strength and courage to fight and win this battle. We love you.

Bonjour Kathleen,

Kathy, You’re in my thoughts and prayers! Know that you have the support you need to win this battle! Keep your spirit strong and beat the “snot” out of this! You’re an amazing woman!

Dear Kathleen, You are in our everyday thoughts and we believe that if there is only one person that can beat the snot out of SNUC, it is you . We will be with you along this rocky road and we can see the freeway ahead.

Prompt rétablissement et salutations à toute la famille.

Kathleen you are in our thoughts and prayers;stay strong and positive. We love you.

Dear Kathleen,

our daughter Saskia (44 mother of two great kids ,Kirsten 17 and Ruben 14) is fighting this horrible cancer for 10 months now,
she was diagnosed with SNUC in december 2008 after 2 months treatment for an eye infection (some sorry eye specialist !)
She has had 38 radiations and 9 rounds of chemo (cisplatine)
and in august 2009 ,80% of the tumor mass was gone, but it returned and now she is in hospital (Rotterdam Erasmus) with high fever. She has double vision, walking is dangerous (she broke a little toe already) driving a car is impossible and so is riding her bik. She lost 10kg of weight and she was always an athletic person (horse riding, Gym) she is now a shadow of the Saskia we knew. We are devastated and the fact that most doctors know nothing about SNUC is very very depressing !

Kathleen keep on fighting !!! our Saskia is doing the same… but
more research must be done about this rare Cancer

all we can do now is pray !!!

p.s. we live in the Netherlands

Are they doing or have they done surgery on your daughter? I hope things improve. Please let her know that there are people in the US praying for her too.

I am so sorry to hear about your daughter. I know how difficult this is, just tell her to keep fighting. I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

You are right about not enough research. I never knew this type of cancer existed as well as my friends and family members. This cancer needs to be known and I am going to do my best to get it out there.

My prayers are with you.

Thank you so much ! it means a lot for us….

no, there was a small chance for surgery in the INI institute in Hanover Germany (Prof.Dr. Draf) but they found metastases in the top of her lungs, surgery is no option then.

we pray for you

Dolf

I am doing very well, thank you. I am done with the radiation and chemo treatments and I just found out today that I have a tentative surgery date for the 30th of this month.

How is your daughter doing? I am keeping her and your family in my prayers.

Dear Kathleen,

I did now want to tell you, but I cannot keep it away any longer,
Our dear daughter Saskia died nov 8th, we are devastated
she was only 44 and leaves her husband and two children 14 and 17 years.
We hope and pray that you will become healthy again !

in tears but with great respect for your battle ..

Dolf and Marijke

p.s. on my spaces there are pictures of our Saskia

Dear Dolf,

I am very sorry to hear that Saskia past away. My sincere condolences. I have taken the liberty to post something (here: http://wp.me/pEgmr-91 ) about her and Barb’s daughter (see below).

My thoughts go to your family.

Marco

Dear Dolf & Marijke,

I haven’t written sooner because I was not sure what to say. I am so sorry about your daughter and my condolences go out to you, your family and to hers. I am sorry that you have to go through this difficult time and it breaks my heart that you have to endure such pain. I can only continue to pray that you have the strength to continue on. I hope your memories of her will help the healing.

With deepest sympathies,
Kathleen

Please let me know if there are any additional research efforts. I lost my beautiful 22 year old daughter a week ago after a 7 month battle with this disease. We buried her on her 23rd birthday.

She was initially treated with chemo to shrink, then chemo / radiation to cure, but the tumor always came back with a vengeance. We went to MD Anderson after the unsuccessful treatments, only to find it had metastisized to her bones, which meant surgery was no longer an option.

This is a horrible disease and I know it can be beat, but we need more research efforts. I would like to start a foundation, to help find a cure.

Please know you are in my heart and prayers…as are all of the victims of this disease.

Dear Barb,

My sincere condolences for your lost. We definitely need more research efforts to quickly identify and cure this disease. May I ask how the first symptoms appeared on the case of your daughter?

I will definitely let you know if we hear about any new research or findings about SNUC. We will also post it on this site (in the blog section and in the links) for sure.

Sincerely,

Marco

Dear Barb

my sincere condolences for your loss, it is inconprehendable to loose a child, Saskia died nov 8th
but ever since our life is a burden. Sleepless nights , crying , the pain…. it gets worse every day !

Saskia started with a tearing left eye in september 2008, after months of (wrong) treatment she went for a second opinion in Rotterdam University Hospital and the SNUC was discovered. She received 9 rounds of Chemo (Cisplatine) and 38 radiations, in July 80%of the tumor mass was gone and full hope she went on
a vacation with her husband and children. Upon return
the last scans showed metastases in her lungs.
Nothing could be done anymore, we went to Germany
to a famous surgeon (dr. Draf), Pittsburgh (dr Snyderman) but all in vain.

The last weeks in October were terrible, she was blind , could not walk, eat ,

She suffered so much !

she s now without pain, but we are destroyed..
she was such a beautiful person, always caring for her children and us.
Her last words, 3 minutes before she died, she touched my face and said : Sorry dad to give you so much grief…

in tears
Dolf

Hi My husband was diagnosed with SNUC last July22. He is undergoing cisplatin and radiation. Please pray for him. Pablo Antonio is his name

Marco,

Ashley’s first signs were just allergy like. Then, she felt a small knot under her eye. We thought she had a blocked tear duct as a result of her allergies. That was May and by June, her eye was swollen and somewhat disfigured. By July, her eye was bulging so bad that she could not close her eye but halfway. She was in so much pain that we spent 11 days in the hospital. While the chemo/radiation seemed to help, by mid-August the cancer had moved to her lymph nodes. In the end, her face was so disfigured and her pain so immense, it was unbearable for her family and friends. Through this, she was so brave and continued to smile for her friends.

I have seen it worse in younger patients. Not being a health professional, my guess is the higher metabolism of a kid.

Don’t give up hope. Lean on family and friends for support. We had every belief that we could beat this. God had another plan, but know that Ashley is watching over all the SNUC patients and she’s going to help us with this.

God bless,

Barb

Barb,

I want to say that I am truely sorry about your daughter. My condolences go out to you and your family. I believe too that she is looking down on us SNUC patients and helping us through. I will continue to pray that the pain will ease with her memories. I am so sorry that you have to go through this.

With deepest sympathies,
Kathleen

Dolf, Marijke and Barb,

Words are not enough to convey our feelings at a time like this. My husband and I wanted to say that you are in our thoughts and prayers as are your two beautiful daughters.

God bless you,

Steve and Michelle

Dear Steve and Michelle

thank you so much for your kind words ! it means so much to us,

we pray for Kathleen and she is in our thoughts all the time,
we know what she must be going through..
She will and must prevail !!

we wish you strenght

Dolf and Marijke

Dolf,

I know that pain. And the grief is watching them in pain. It was a blessing when she was finally free and at peace. I really want to figure out how to literally, “KICK THE SNOT OUT OF SNUC”

I will be checking with some doctors in the US who do research to look into starting a foundation or something to help others.

Barb

Bonjour Kathleen et Greg.

doctor Carl Snyderman (snyderman@upmc.edu) is a great
doctor and he has knowledge about SNUC…
He is in the Pittsburgh University Centre
He did all he could for Saskia ….

Hi Dolf,

Dr. Snyderman is the doctor performing Kathleen’s surgery next Monday. He also performed Kathleen’s last surgery.

Thanks and regards,

Marco

I received a response from Dr. Curiel who did some work with Andy Martin, another SNUC victim. He says he is working with researchers at MD Anderson and he said, while slow now, continues his “Bounce for Life”. I talked with Ashley’s oncology nurse on Friday and she is going to talk with the doctors at MD Anderson who we consulted with, to see if there are continued research efforts. Likely, the ones Dr. Curiel works with.

If you could also ask Dr. Snyderman, who will be performing Kathleen’s surgery, perhaps we can find out about more research efforts. I hope to start a foundation in Ashley’s honor and will let you know what I find out.

Kathleen remains in my prayers. God Bless you all!

Barb

The Brouwers’ and The Abernathys,

My most sincere and heartfelt condolences on the loss of your daughter/sister/mother/wife. My heart breaks for you. There aren’t any words that I can say that can express how strong and courageous you are to share your experiences with us. I can only hope that it is enabling you to heal, knowing that your families are in our thoughts and prayers daily. We may be strangers and parted by the ocean but we will always share a bond that will never be broken. Saskia and Ashley will be a part of me forever.
As my sister is having surgery, I know that the prayers and well wishes are flooding the skies. I know she will prevail and when she is better and on her feet we will have all of you the thank.

God bless all of you,
Michele

Kathleen ! we in Holland are praying for you !!! godspeed !

Hi Mich

so good to read your comment ! just an ocean away we are praying for your sister ! she will and must prevail !
Our family is still mourning our dear Saskia, sleepless nights, tears, physical pain… it is just hell…

Dear Kathleen,
it was great seeing you on Tuesday, in Presby’s surgical waiting room. You are looking great. At my job I get the chance to meet the most amazing people, you and your family were some of the families that just stand out. You stand out for all of your courage, and stay in my heart forever.
God Bless each and everyone of you.
You, your husband, your two little boys, your mum and your dad.
And as you can see, after talking to you, I was able to get on.
I will always carry you in my heart and in my prayers.
sheryl

It was wonderful to see you too. I will make sure that when I am back in the area, I will stop again. Maybe next appointment I can drag my parents along with me again. LOL!!
Thank you so much for your prayers and support. It means a lot to our family.

My dad was diagnosed with SNUC yesterday and reading all the notes on the internet I feel hopeless and devastated. Kathleen please l hope this message finds you well and you fought it and to offer any advice on how to fight this battle

Lisa,

Where are you located? There are some good hospitals around that have dealt with SNUC (University of Michigan- Dr Marentette, University of Pitt-Dr. Snyderman, MD Anderson-Dr. Lai and others, just don’t remember the names). I would consult the experts because it so rare.

Attitude plays a big part. I think Kathleen demonstrated to us.
Fight the good fight and keep us posted on progress. If I can answer anything directly, my email is babernethy1111@gmail.com.

and while I’m at it…Kathleen, you’re still in my prayers.

Lisa,

My father had SNUC about 3 years ago. Thankfully we live in Michigan and he ended up going to the University of Michigan Health system. Dr. Marentette is a great man, he and the many other doctors were very stright forward with my father and told him, this is what we are going to do and this is how we are going to do it. Three years later he is cancer free and doing great. My family and I cannot praise Dr. Marentette enough for what he did. I highly recommend trying to contact him due to his extensive knowledge on SNUC.

George

Lisa, I am so sorry that I have not gotten back to you until now. I am so sorry that your dad has been diagnosed with this. The only thing I can suggest is that your dad keep a very strong attitude and a positive one. I cannot say for sure it that is how I beat it but I know when I was diagnosed, I had already knew that I was not going to let “it” win! I was always in a good mood and I just took one day at a time and kept the positive thoughts flowing. I had stage 2 and the size of my tumor was a bit bigger than a golf ball. What stage is your dad in and what is he doing for chemo/radiation? Is he having surgery? If you would like my email address so we can write, please let me know. I will keep you and your dad in my prayers and if you need a shoulder, I am here for you. Kathleen

There is hope! Positive attitude and KNOWING he can beat this is key.. I pray for you and your family. It WILL be a rough road, but with support from family and friends he can make it!

Dear Lisa,

do not give up hope ! Kathleen won the battle and so can your dad !
We wish you and your family all the strenght in the world, you are not alone,
people around the globe are praying for your dad !

sincerely yours
Dolf & Marijke
